🔥 Is the Trinity Unbiblical? Let’s Put the Watchtower to the Test‼️
1. Understanding the Claim: What Jehovah’s Witnesses Say About the Trinity 🧩
What’s up LIT Family?! We’re back with the next article in our series exposing the top arguments Jehovah’s Witnesses use to attack Christianity. Today’s topic is one of the most important and one of the most misunderstood: The Trinity — or as the Bible calls it, the Godhead. Jehovah’s Witnesses argue that the Trinity is man-made, unbiblical, and that Christians only believe in it because of tradition. They say Jesus is not God, the Holy Spirit is not a person, and the word “Trinity” does not appear in Scripture. But when you examine what they teach and compare it to the Word of God, the cracks begin to show.
The Watchtower says Jesus is “a god,” a lesser divine being, and that the Holy Spirit is simply a force. They claim that Greek scholars translate John 1:1 differently and that Scripture supports only one Person being Jehovah. But here’s what we’re going to do: instead of taking their word for it, we’re going to examine the Scriptures — in context and in the original language — and see whether the Bible supports their claims.
Because family, once the light of Scripture shines, darkness cannot hide. Let’s begin.
2. The Greek Evidence: What John 1 and Theos Really Say 📜🕊️
One of the biggest arguments Jehovah’s Witnesses make is that the Greek of John 1:1 does not say “the Word was God,” but “the Word was a god.” So let’s look directly at the Greek text they are referring to. This removes all speculation and forces us to deal with what was truly written.
🖼️ John 1:1–5 Greek Text
The literal translation of the Greek phrase καὶ Θεὸς ἦν ὁ Λόγος is:
“and God was the Word.”
There is no grammatical foundation for adding “a.” Greek does not use indefinite articles, so translators only add “a” when the context forces it. So, in John 1, the context explicitly points to the Word sharing the nature of God.
To further expose the Watchtower's misinterpretation, we look at the Greek lexicon definition of Theos.
🖼️ Lexical Definition of Theos
Jehovah’s Witnesses claim “Theos” means “a mighty one,” but the Greek definition shows:
-
God, the supreme Divinity
-
The word used for God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
The detailed outline of biblical usage makes this even clearer:
🖼️ Outline of Theos Usage
The term Theos is consistently used to describe:
-
God the Father
-
Christ
-
The Holy Spirit
-
The Godhead (Trinity)
At no point does the outline define it as “a mighty one.”
This means the Watchtower argument is not linguistic; it is a theological manipulation.
3. The Old Testament Evidence: Multiple Persons Share the Name YHWH 🌩️🔥
Now that we have established Jesus is rightly called Theos, we must address an even bigger problem for Jehovah’s Witnesses: the Old Testament repeatedly shows more than one Person sharing the divine name YHWH (Jehovah).
For example, Zechariah 2:10–11 reveals Yahweh sending Yahweh:
“I am coming and I will dwell in your midst,”
declares Yahweh…
“Then you will know that Yahweh of hosts has sent Me to you.”
This passage is devastating for Watchtower theology because it presents two Persons, both called Yahweh, one sending the other.
Then Genesis 19:24 states:
“Then Yahweh rained down fire from Yahweh out of heaven.”
Again, we have two Persons named Yahweh.
This cannot be an angel speaking for God, because the divine name appears twice with two actions and two locations.
Next, Proverbs 30:4 directly asks:
“What is His name, and what is His Son’s name?”
The Old Testament already presents a Father and Son relationship within the Godhead. Jehovah’s Witnesses ignore these verses entirely because they destroy the idea that Jehovah is only one Person.
4. The New Testament Evidence: The Father, the Son, and the Spirit 👑🕊️🔥
In the New Testament, the evidence becomes even clearer. Hebrews 1 quotes God the Father speaking to the Son:
“Your throne, O God, is forever…”
“You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth…”
Here, the Father:
-
Calls the Son God (Theos)
-
Calls the Son Lord (from the OT where the word is YHWH)
-
Attributes creation to Him
Jehovah’s Witnesses teach that Jesus is Michael the archangel, yet the Father declares the Son created the heavens and the earth. That is something no angel has ever done.
Isaiah 63 reveals the threefold nature of God:
-
The Father
-
The Angel of His Presence (the Son)
-
The Holy Spirit
But the crushing blow comes when comparing Psalm 95 with Hebrews 3.
Psalm 95 says YHWH spoke.
Hebrews 3 quotes the same passage and says the Holy Spirit spoke.
Conclusion:
🔥 The Holy Spirit is YHWH.
Then Paul seals this truth:
“The Lord is the Spirit…” (2 Cor. 3:17)
The Holy Spirit is Lord.
Lord = YHWH.
Therefore, the Holy Spirit is fully God.
5. Final Revelation: The Bible Teaches One God in Three Persons — The Godhead 🙏📖
Jehovah’s Witnesses like to say:
“The word Trinity isn’t in the Bible.”
Neither is the word “Bible,” yet they use that word.
The absence of the term does not negate the truth.
The Bible uses the word Godhead (Romans 1:20; Colossians 2:9), which means the divine nature shared by Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
When you combine:
-
The Greek evidence
-
The Old Testament appearances of multiple Persons as YHWH
-
The Father identifying the Son as God
-
The Holy Spirit speaking as YHWH
-
And the New Testament unity of Father, Son, and Spirit
The conclusion becomes undeniable:
🔥 The Trinity is not man-made. It is the revelation of Scripture.
🔥 There is one God, and three Persons fully share His nature.
🔥 This is the Godhead — eternal, holy, and united.
If you want to know the truth, don’t rely on the Watchtower.
Ask the Lord to reveal Himself to you as you read the word, and watch what He does.
And stay tuned, this series is only getting started.
